EXHIBITION + FESTIVAL 19 – 24 July 2022, Muffatwerk

Frequencies, waves, noise, silence: particle physics employs a vocabulary remarkably similar to sound. In the summer of 2021, the SVS collective initiated a residency for experimental, sound-based work at the Laboratorio subterraneo de Canfranc in the Spanish Pyrenees, one of the leading research laboratories for dark matter, creating a space for interdisciplinary exchange. The invited artists have teamed up with physicists working on-site to explore common questions: Is music subject to the dictum of chronology? How do particles sound when they collide?

The collaborative process has resulted in various works, from sound installations to performances to multimedia pieces, that mediate between and connect the two spheres of art and physics. The exhibition brings together the outcomes of the joint experiments. The festival complements these with concerts, live performances and DJ sets by international guest artists alongside residency participants.

The SVS COLLISIONS exhibition is produced by the SVS collective in cooperation with the Muffatwerk and funded by Musikfonds e. V. with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media as part of the special programme Neustart Kultur and the Cultural Department of the City of Munich.

The COLLISIONS Festival is curated by Beni Brachtel, the SVS collective and Dietmar Lupfer, co-produced by Muffatwerk and funded by Neustart Kultur and Initiative Musik.
